Facelift Q&A

What happens during a face-lift?

With Dr. Heringer, your face-lift surgery is as unique as you are. He customizes a treatment plan based on your individual concerns and facial structure.

A face-lift addresses the obvious signs of aging, like wrinkles and sagging skin. It can also redefine the youthful contours of your face to take years off your appearance.

During your face-lift procedure — medically known as a rhytidectomy — Dr. Heringer may make incisions along your hairline or near your ears, so scarring is minimal. He may trim away excess skin and tighten muscle and tissue to contour your facial features.

He uses the Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System (SMAS) face-lift, an advanced procedure that addresses your skin as well as the underlying muscles. The SMAS face-lift delivers the most natural-looking results.

A face-lift focuses on the lower portion of your face and jaw, lifting and tightening skin and underlying muscle to minimize the effects of aging.

Once your skin and facial muscles are in their desired position, Dr. Heringer closes the incisions. Depending on your goals, you may combine a face-lift with a brow lift and neck lift for a total rejuvenating effect.

Am I a good candidate for a face-lift?

You may be a good candidate for a face-lift if you meet the following criteria:

  • Overall good health
  • Nonsmoker
  • Realistic expectations of outcome
  • Desire a younger-looking appearance
  • Sufficient skin elasticity
  • Understand the recovery process

Dr. Heringer reviews your medical history, any health concerns, and questions you have to help you decide which procedure is best for you.

What is the recovery like after a face-lift?

Since a face-lift is a surgical procedure, you can expect to be out of work for one to two weeks as you rest and recover.

Expect to have some bruising, swelling, and discoloration near your incisions. As long as you follow your post-operative instructions and rest so your body can heal, you should be able to minimize discomfort and prevent infection.

Sleeping with your head elevated helps reduce swelling and pain and promotes healing, so you’re back to your daily activities in a matter of a week or two.

You take antibiotics and other pain management medication as Dr. Heringer prescribes. It’s a good idea to avoid strenuous activity until Dr. Heringer recommends.
