Are You a Good Candidate for JUVÉDERM® or Restylane® Injections?

Middle-aged woman with head resting in hand, looking content with her soft facial skin after JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® injectionsFor people who are experiencing signs of aging on their facial skin but who do not wish to undergo more invasive plastic surgery procedures such as face lift, minimally invasive skin treatments such as dermal filler injections offer a potentially ideal solution. At Arizona Ocular and Facial Plastic Surgery, we proudly offer a full range of dermal fillers, including JUVÉDERM® and Restylane®, to patients who wish to achieve facial rejuvenation by temporarily reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on their faces. In general, patients achieve stunning results that last for months, at which point treatment can safely be repeated.

At our plastic surgery practice in Scottsdale, JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® candidates are carefully evaluated to ensure that they are well suited to treatment and are likely to achieve the best possible results. Are JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® injections right for you? The only way to know for certain is to meet with our esteemed professionals for a confidential consultation at your earliest convenience.

What is JUVÉDERM®?

JUVÉDERM® is a dermal filler based on hyaluronic acid, a protein that occurs naturally within the human body. Hyaluronic acid binds to and absorbs water, which makes it a superb filler substance when injected into hollow areas under the skin. JUVÉDERM® is particularly effective in treating nasolabial folds (also known as “smile lines,” or the lines that extend from the sides of the nose down to the corners of the mouth), marionette lines (the lines that form below the corners of the mouth), vertical lip lines, and sunken cheeks.

What is Restylane®?

Like JUVÉDERM®, Restylane® is a hyaluronic acid based dermal filler that is effective in treating fine lines and moderate wrinkles, including nasolabial folds, marionette lines, vertical lip lines, and sunken cheeks. Restylane® is slightly stiffer than JUVÉDERM®, making it potentially more suitable to instances in which a newly sculpted shape needs to be maintained; conversely, JUVÉDERM® tends to be smoother, making it potentially better suited to instances in which conformity to the patient’s natural contours is desired.

Both Restylane and JUVÉDERM® produce long-lasting results, generally lasting between six months and a year before re-treatment is necessary.

Candidacy for JUVÉDERM® and Restylane®

Most patients are good candidates for JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® injections. Because the two products are, in all honesty, quite similar in composition, if you are a candidate for one, you are almost certainly a candidate for the other. Both are based on a naturally occurring protein in the human body; therefore, allergic reactions to either filler is extremely rare.

In order to be a good candidate for JUVÉDERM® or Restylane® injections, you should:

  • Be in overall good health.
  • Have fine to moderate wrinkles on your face.
  • Have realistic expectations of your results.
  • Understand that your results will be temporary.
  • Not be pregnant or nursing.
  • Not have a skin infection on or near the area you wish to treat.
  • Not have severe allergies.
  • Not currently be taking antibiotics, heart medication, or certain other medications.
