Lower Eyelid Surgery for Under Eye Circles

By dustinheringer on October 01, 2015

Close shot of woman’s youthful brown eye. Due to aging, skin damage, congenital conditions, or other factors, many people develop darker, puffy, sagging bags under their eyes. If you’d like to enjoy brighter eyes and a rejuvenated look, Dr. Dustin Heringer, Dr. William McCleish, and our team can perform blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery. During this procedure, we’ll tighten your tissue, remove excess fat, and trim your skin to eliminate your bags. This targeted surgery addresses a very specific region of your face, but can provide dazzling results either on its own or in combination with other treatments. In addition, blepharoplasty can offer ophthalmological benefits, if drooping skin interferes with your eyesight. For these reasons, more than 200,000 people undergo blepharoplasty every year, as reported by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Read on to learn more about lower eyelid surgery for under eye circles at our Scottsdale practice.

Are You a Candidate?

Many patients want to brighten their eyes with blepharoplasty, but you must meet certain criteria to qualify for this procedure. You may be a good candidate for lower eyelid surgery if:

  • You have surplus fat, extra skin, or swollen tissue beneath your eyes
  • You have excessive wrinkles or fine lines in the under eye region
  • Puffiness beneath your eyes interferes with your eyesight
  • You are in good general health, so you can safely undergo anesthesia and recover well from blepharoplasty
  • You do not smoke
  • You have healthy eyes free from ophthalmological conditions that could interfere with surgery
  • You are an adult
  • You have realistic expectations for the outcome of your procedure

At your initial consultation, Dr. Heringer or Dr. McCleish will examine your eyes, review your medical records, and discuss your concerns with you to determine if you are eligible for blepharoplasty.

What Lower Eyelid Surgery Entails

This procedure is relatively simple and minimally invasive. To begin, we will administer local anesthesia and sedation to keep you comfortable and calm. Next, your surgeon will create a tiny incision along your lash line. He will then use this opening to remove or reposition excess fat deposits for a more youthful look. Your surgeon may also perform fat grafting to enhance this area. In some cases, we also modify the underlying muscles for a tighter, smoother appearance. Finally, your surgeon will pull the skin taut and trim the surplus. You may experience minimal bruising and inflammation for a few weeks, but taking the post-operative medications we provide and using cold compresses should allow you to manage this slight discomfort. Most patients return to regular activity in just one week and can resume wearing makeup within two weeks. Just a few short weeks after your procedure, you should be able to fully enjoy life without under eye circles.

Benefits of Blepharoplasty

While its most obvious benefit is correcting under eye circles, lower eyelid surgery can also:

  • Restore or enhance your vision
  • Boost your confidence
  • Act as a complement to other facial cosmetic procedures, such as a brow lift, neck lift, rhinoplasty, or facial implants

We can further detail the benefits of lower eyelid surgery for your case at your first appointment.
