Those needs have changed over the years, as statistics on facial plastic surgery reveal. Let’s take a moment to consider some numbers of facial rejuvenation surgery as well as non-surgical approaches to anti-aging. All of the statistics below come from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
Most Popular Facial Plastic Surgery Procedures in 2017
The following is a list of facial plastic surgery procedures ranked by popularity according to the ASPS:
- Rhinoplasty (nose job)
- Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)
- Neck lift
- Forehead lift
- Lip augmentation
- Otoplasty (ear surgery)
- Chin augmentation
- Cheek implants
Let’s look at each of these procedures individually below.
Rhinoplasty (Nose Job) Statistics
In 2017, there were 218,924 nose reshaping procedures performed, making rhinoplasty the third most popular plastic surgery procedure overall behind breast augmentation and liposuction. Roughly 76 percent of these surgeries were performed on women.
Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) Statistics
In 2017, there were 209,571 cosmetic eyelid surgery procedures performed, putting it in fourth place for popular plastic surgery procedures. Approximately 85 percent of these eyelid surgeries were performed on women.
There were 125,697 facelifts performed in 2017. Of that number, 91 percent were performed on women.
Neck Lift Statistics
There were 53,028 neck lift surgeries performed in 2017. While we do not have the gender breakdown numbers available, the 2017 total is down from the 2016 total of 55,227.
Forehead Lift Statistics
There were 39,886 forehead lift surgeries performed in 2017, which is down from 43,038 in 2016. For perspective, 120,971 forehead lifts were performed in the year 2000.
Lip Augmentation Statistics
There were 29,797 lip augmentation procedures performed using lip implants. This is up from the 2016 total of 28,430.
Otoplasty (Ear Reshaping) Statistics
There were 23,433 ear reshaping surgeries performed in 2017. Of that total number, 6,610 ear surgeries were performed on patients ages 13-19 (28 percent), and 7,100 ear surgeries were performed on patients ages 20-29 (30 percent).
Chin Augmentation Statistics
There were 16,136 chin augmentation surgeries performed in 2017. Of that total, men actually underwent the majority of the procedures with 8,717 male chin augmentations (54 percent).
Cheek Implant Statistics
There were a total of 14,277 cheek implant surgeries performed in 2017, which was up 8 percent from the total cheek implant procedures performed in 2016 (13,197).
Cosmetic Injectable Statistics
Cosmetic injectables have become extremely popular over the years. BOTOX® injections lead the way with 7,230,967 procedures in 2017. This was the most popular cosmetic procedure across the board, surgical or non-surgical. This is up from 7,056,255 BOTOX® injections in 2016.
Dermal filler injections were also quite popular, with 2,691,265 procedures in 2017. The most popular individual filler types included:
- Hyaluronic acid fillers (Restylane®, Juvederm®)
- Calcium hydroxylapatite fillers (Radiesse®)
- Polylactic acid fillers (Sculptra®)
Non-Surgical Skin Care Statistics
In addition to cosmetic injectables, there were many other popular non-surgical facial rejuvenation procedures. This included these four popular skin care treatments:
- Chemical peels (1,376,703)
- Microdermabrasion (740,287)
- Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment (667,561)
- Laser skin resurfacing (587,903)
