Chin Augmentation

A Chin Implant Can Strengthen and Define Your Lower Face

Chin augmentation at our Scottsdale, AZ, practice can enhance a weak or receding chin. In this way, it can improve the balance of your facial features both head-on and in profile. At Arizona Ocular and Facial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Dustin Heringer can use dermal fillers to perform chin augmentation. However, he most frequently places facial implants because of their permanent effects. If needed, he can also perform chin reduction, removing and sculpting the bone tissue. With any of these procedures, he offers general anesthesia and IV sedation to help you relax. Afterwards, he will guide you through the healing process. When you follow his instructions, you should enjoy an uncomplicated recovery and stunning final results.

Are You a Candidate for Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation is a highly personalized procedure designed to improve the balance, curvature, and definition of your jaw. It is a popular option for both men and women. It may be appropriate if you are suffering from:

  • A receding chin, especially if it makes your forehead, nose, or other features look disproportionately small
  • An unusually narrow or pointed chin
  • A disproportionately short chin that makes your face appear off balance
  • A double chin or heavy neck that is not due to excess weight

To qualify for chin augmentation, you should be in good health with normal jaw and dental function.

If you have an unusually large or excessively pointed chin, Dr. Heringer may suggest chin reduction. You must meet the same health requirements to qualify for this treatment.

The Chin Augmentation Process

In a few cases, Dr. Heringer may use JUVÉDERM® XC or Restylane® to enhance your chin. While these dermal fillers are conservative, they do not provide permanent results. Furthermore, they are usually appropriate only if you desire a very minor change in your appearance. For these reasons, Dr. Heringer most commonly places silicone chin implants. These implants come in a variety of sizes and shape variations. Dr. Heringer will carefully choose the one that most closely matches the natural contours and proportions of your face.

Chin augmentation is a highly personalized procedure designed to improve the balance, curvature, and definition of your jaw. It is a popular option for both men and women.

Surgery typically takes between 45 and 90 minutes. Before beginning your procedure, Dr. Heringer will administer local anesthesia and another deeper method of sedation. Then he will create small incisions underneath your chin or inside your mouth to eliminate visible scars. With great precision, he will place the implant over your chin bone. Finally, he will close the incisions with stitches.

Recovering from Chin Augmentation

Recovery from chin augmentation is relatively easy. Even so, you should expect some minor swelling, inflammation, and bruising afterwards. To reduce these effects and to ensure more successful healing, you will need to wear a special compression bandage for a few days. Like many patients, you may be ready to return to work in two to three days, although you should avoid heavy physical activity for several weeks. Stitches will remain in place for approximately 10 days. If Dr. Heringer uses dissolvable sutures, they will disintegrate by this point. During the entire healing process, your doctor will provide detailed instructions for your safety and comfort.
