An image outlining the lower eyelidAt Arizona Ocular and Facial Plastic Surgery in Scottsdale, AZ, we can restore your youthful appearance and enhance your self-confidence with fully personalized procedures. Lower eyelid surgery can improve puffy under-eye bags and even brighten dark circles. In this way, it can help you look younger, more rested, and more alert. Dr. Dustin Heringer uses extremely precise techniques and will carefully tailor your surgery to achieve your goals, minimize discomfort, and virtually eliminate scarring. He understands that you may be nervous about the procedure, and for this reason, he offers both general and IV sedation. He will also outline the treatment ahead of time, and he provide thorough and compassionate guidance during your recovery.

Are You a Candidate for Lower Eyelid Surgery?

As you age, your skin and muscles around your eyes begin to slacken, causing your lower eyelids to droop. Additionally, your skin can lose elasticity, and fat deposits can accumulate beneath your eyes. As a result, puffy bags may appear. Dark circles can also be the result of displaced fat deposits. In some cases, your eyelids may droop so low that the pink skin beneath your eyes is visible. If you suffer from any of these cosmetic concerns, you may be a great candidate for lower eyelid surgery. To qualify for treatment, you should:

  • Not have any serious or chronic health conditions that could inhibit healing
  • Be a non-smoker (or be willing to quit several weeks before surgery)
  • Not suffer from any eye diseases or pronounced dry eye
  • Have achievable goals

The Lower Blepharoplasty Surgical Process

Your lower blepharoplasty procedure will begin with a thorough consultation. Dr. Heringer will discuss your goals, health history, and budget. That way, he can design a procedure that meets all of your needs. Just before the surgery itself, you will receive sedation. IV sedation is conservative and will wear off quickly. On the other hand, general anesthesia may be more appropriate if you are feeling particularly anxious. As always, we are completely committed to your comfort. We will do whatever is necessary to help you feel at ease.

Lower eyelid surgery can improve puffy under-eye bags and even brighten dark circles. In this way, it can help you look younger, more rested, and more alert.

After these preparatory steps, Dr. Heringer will create small incisions. Usually, he will place them inside your lower lids, where scars will be invisible. In some cases, however, the incisions may be located just under your lash line. In these instances, scarring will still be virtually undetectable. Through these tiny openings, Dr. Heringer can remove damaged and sagging skin. Other times, he may simply need to eliminate or redistribute pockets of fat. In either case, he will use precise techniques to achieve a natural effect and avoid an overly hollow appearance. When he is finished, he will carefully close any incisions, often with dissolvable stitches. In some cases, he can augment the results of your blepharoplasty with a non-surgical treatment, such as laser skin resurfacing.

Recovering from Lower Eyelid Surgery

Because Dr. Heringer uses such careful methods, your blepharoplasty recovery should be relatively quick and easy. It is normal to experience some swelling and bruising. You can minimize these effects with ice packs and appropriate medications. After about two weeks, most side effects should subside, and you can resume your normal activities. All the same, you should not engage in strenuous exercise for several more weeks or until Dr. Heringer gives his approval. After approximately six weeks, you should begin to see the final results of your surgery. Residual and minimal swelling may persist for up to a year.

The Benefits of Lower Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty offers a number of benefits. Eyelid surgery can erase years from your face, giving you a refreshed and more open appearance. You may feel significantly more confident, as well. It is important to note that, while upper eyelid surgery can have health benefits, we typically offer lower blepharoplasty only for its cosmetic effects. Therefore, the procedure is not usually covered by insurance. At the same time, most of our patients feel that the upfront financial investment is well worth the priceless results of their treatment.
