Blepharoplasty Q&A

What is blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that repairs droopy, puffy eyelids to give you a younger appearance.

Blepharoplasty may include removing excess skin, muscle, and fat from your upper or lower eyelids, or both, depending on your individual needs.

Although many women and men choose blepharoplasty for aesthetic reasons, if your eyelids droop too far, they can impair your peripheral vision.

What happens during blepharoplasty?

Dr. Heringer and the team at Arizona Ocular & Facial Plastic Surgery make every effort to ensure your comfort throughout the entire procedure.

Typically, you receive a local anesthetic and sedation so you’re relaxing comfortably during surgery. For an upper eyelid surgery, Dr. Heringer makes incisions that are hidden in the crease of your upper eyelid.

For lower blepharoplasty, he creates a nearly invisible incision along your lower lash line. He carefully removes excess skin and fatty tissue, and tightens the underlying muscles that often weaken with age.

Depending on your individual needs, Dr. Heringer can also reposition fatty tissue to give your eyes a more youthful appearance.

Additionally, he may recommend fat grafting or laser skin resurfacing to enhance the overall results of your blepharoplasty procedure. After you heal from blepharoplasty, which takes about a week, you’ll appear well-rested and rejuvenated.

Am I a good candidate for blepharoplasty?

If you have impaired vision or you simply don’t like the way your drooping eyelids or bags under your eyes make you look, blepharoplasty is an ideal solution. You may be a good candidate for this procedure if you have:

  • Excess upper eyelid skin that interferes with your vision
  • Excess lower eyelid skin
  • Bags under your eyes even when you’re well-rested
  • Droopy eyelids
  • No serious skin or eye conditions
  • Realistic expectations for the outcome

It also helps with recovery if you’re a nonsmoker and you don’t have any serious medical conditions that may prevent you from healing.

After surgery, your results should look natural, not overdone, which is why choosing an expert ocular and facial plastic surgeon like Dr. Heringer means you get the results you desire based on his extensive experience and skills.
