What is Microdermabrasion?

During microdermabrasion, a gentle stream of fine microcrystals is sprayed onto the epidermis (outer layer of skin) to exfoliate and rid it of dry, dead cells. In addition to exfoliation, it can improve the skin’s texture by increasing the production of collagen in the underlying layer. Compared to dermabrasion, this treatment is a significantly gentler skin exfoliation and polishing method to create a more youthful complexion. Microdermabrasion can improve the appearance of a variety of skin conditions, such as:

  • Acne and blackheads
  • Minor scars
  • Age or sun spots
  • Rosacea
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Large pores
  • Hyperpigmentation

After exfoliation, microdermabrasion is effective for evening out skin tone and revealing younger skin. However, it is less potent than laser skin resurfacing or chemical peels for addressing deep facial lines and wrinkles. During your private consultation in Scottsdale, AZ, Dr. Heringer and his treatment team can help you decide between laser skin resurfacing, microdermabrasion, and other options.

Your Microdermabrasion Journey with Dr. Dustin Heringer

What’s the first step?

During your initial consultation, Dr. Heringer and the team will evaluate your skin, general health, medical history, current medications, and cosmetic goals to create a personalized treatment plan.

They will also thoroughly explain the microdermabrasion procedure, the results you can expect, and any additional skin treatments that may help you achieve the best results.

What to Expect on the Day of a Microdermabrasion Treatment

Before beginning the procedure, your skin will be thoroughly cleansed. Once it has been adequately prepared, a handheld device will be used to release microcrystals at a high rate onto the skin’s surface. As the handheld device moves across your skin, it simultaneously polishes it and removes dead skin cells.

You may feel a mild scratching and vibrating sensation during treatment. Once it is complete, an SPF moisturizer will be applied to your face to hydrate and protect your skin from the elements. Immediately following the procedure, you can return to your normal activities. To maintain your results, we advise that you implement a routine skin care regimen, diligently wear sunscreen, and schedule monthly or bi-monthly treatments.

Your Guide to Post-Microdermabrasion Care

Microdermabrasion Recovery

Microdermabrasion does not come with downtime. However, you may encounter skin that looks slightly red and feels extra tight after your session. Some patients describe the aftermath of microdermabrasion as similar to a mild sunburn. Within a few hours, you can expect things to return to normal. Your skin will be extra sensitive to the sun’s UV rays after treatment, so take care to avoid direct sunlight for a few days after your session.

Minor flaking and peeling may occur. This is normal. It signals that you are shedding dead skin cells and that your new, healthier skin layer is emerging. Avoid strenuous exercise and visits to the sauna or steam room for a few days after a microdermabrasion session. Other than these minor restrictions, you will not need to alter your schedule in any way.

How Much Does Microdermabrasion Cost in Scottsdale, AZ?

The cost of microdermabrasion in Scottsdale can vary depending on the extent of your skin concerns and the areas addressed. Your complexion and medical history will be evaluated during your private consultation, and you will be offered personalized pricing.
