Customized Rhinoplasty Techniques for Natural-Looking Improvement

woman's chinDr. Dustin Heringer is a board certified plastic surgeon who can customize rhinoplasty techniques at our Scottsdale, AZ, practice to create a more balanced and attractive nose. At Arizona Ocular and Facial Plastic Surgery, we can offer either an open or closed rhinoplasty according to the patient’s ethnicity, overall appearance, and aesthetic desires. After a thorough consultation, Dr. Heringer will choose the technique based on the patient’s individual requirements.

Open Rhinoplasty

With the open rhinoplasty approach, incisions are placed across the columella, the thin tissues between the nostrils, so Dr. Heringer can remove skin from the tip of the nose for complete visibility of the nasal framework. Once the skin has been removed, he will carefully reshape the underlying cartilage to minimize distortions and  achieve the desired shape. With an open rhinoplasty, there is a risk for scar tissue development and scarring on the underside of the nose.

Although both open and closed rhinoplasty techniques are effective, the technique chosen varies from patient to patient.

However, this technique delivers more accurate diagnosis and is the preferred approach for complex cases including:

  • Cleft-lip or palate deformities
  • Airway obstruction
  • Correcting major nose projection and de-projection
  • Reconstructive rhinoplasty
  • Correcting nasal fractures
  • Ethnic rhinoplasty

Closed Rhinoplasty

During the traditional closed method, also known as an endonasal procedure, Dr. Heringer will make
incisions inside the nose to avoid visible external scarring. Because of the narrow incisions, there is reduced surgical access and limited visibility, which can inhibit Dr. Heringer from correcting major aesthetic and functional concerns. In some cases, this technique can also lead to the distortion of nasal cartilage.

This technique is a good option for patients who require minimal nose tip changes, and want to improve minor aesthetic concerns. The closed rhinoplasty technique may be used for some functional improvements, such as obstructed nasal passageways, but will depend on the patient’s nose shape and unique needs. A closed rhinoplasty has the benefit of shorter operative time, reduced swelling, quicker recovery, and minimal scarring.

Choosing the Best Technique

Dr. Heringer will perform a detailed exam of your physical health and nose, along with a complete review or your medical history and cosmetic goals, to determine the right technique for your individual needs. Although both open and closed rhinoplasty techniques are effective, the technique chosen varies from patient to patient.

For patients desiring dramatic aesthetic improvements or who have recently experienced nasal trauma, an open rhinoplasty technique is generally the better option. With this technique, Dr. Heringer will have greater access to all aspects of your nose to make the necessary adjustments. A closed rhinoplasty has proven to be successful for patients who only need to correct minor aesthetic concerns on the nasal bridge or tip of the nose.
