ASPS Facial Plastic Surgery Statistics

By dustinheringer on April 29, 2019

A woman's face and eyesThe American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recently released their statistics for 2018. These numbers look at the popularity of various surgical and non-surgical procedures performed in the United States. Once again, cosmetic eyelid surgery (aka eyelift or blepharoplasty) ranked high, as did BOTOX injections and rhinoplasty (nose job). Dr. Dustin Heringer and his team feel these numbers suggest where the future of facial plastic surgery could be headed.

The team at our Scottsdale, AZ cosmetic surgery and skin care center would like to break down some of these numbers below. We can discuss the right treatment for you and your needs in more detail when you visit Arizona Ocular and Facial Plastic Surgery.

Facial Plastic Surgery Procedures

The five most popular facial plastic surgery procedures in 2018 were as follows:

  • Nose Reshaping (Rhinoplasty) - 213,780
  • Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) - 206,529
  • Facelift (Rhytidectomy) - 121,531
  • Dermabrasion - 80,697
  • Neck lift - 53,571

The forehead/brow lift landed outside of the top five with 38,795 procedures in 2018.

Non-Surgical Facial Rejuvenation Procedures

The five most popular non-surgical facial rejuvenation procedures in 2018 were as follows:

  • Botulinum Toxin Type A (BOTOX Cosmetic) - 7,437,378
  • Soft Tissue Fillers - 2,676,970
  • Chemical Peel - 1,384,327
  • Laser Hair Removal - 1,077,490
  • Microdermabrasion - 709,413

Intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment and laser skin resurfacing procedures landed outside of the top five with 675,552 procedures and 594,266 procedures, respectively.

The Popularity of BOTOX

There has been a major increase in the popularity of BOTOX injections over the years, with more and more people looking to reduce the appearance of frown lines and laugh lines without the need for surgery. Here are some BOTOX injection numbers from previous years for some perspective:

  • BOTOX Injections in 2017 - 7,230,967
  • BOTOX Injections in 2016 - 7,056,255
  • BOTOX Injections in 2015 - 6,757,198
  • BOTOX Injections in 2014 - 6,673,608
  • BOTOX Injections in 2013 - 6,321,160

The increased popularity of BOTOX injections may be linked to the steady dips in popularity of the traditional facelift. Let’s look at facelift numbers in previous for a sense of comparison:

  • Facelifts in 2017 - 125,697
  • Facelifts in 2016 - 131,106
  • Facelifts in 2015 - 125,711
  • Facelifts in 2014 - 128,266
  • Facelifts in 2013 - 133,320

While the facelift is still relatively popular, more people are seeking non-surgical aesthetic enhancements than they are traditional surgical procedures. It fits the trend we have seen among our patients in the greater Scottsdale area.

A Breakdown of Soft Tissue Filler Statistics

Soft tissue/dermal filler occupied the second highest slot for non-surgical procedures, yet there are many kinds of these injectables. Here are the five most popular dermal filler injections by type:

  • Hyaluronic Acid (JUVÉDERM™, Perlane®, Restylane®) - 2,128,923
  • Calcium Hydroxylapatite (Radiesse®) - 227,234
  • Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) - 127,394
  • Polylactic Acid (Sculptra®) - 121,920
  • Fat Transfer Injection - 45,360

What These Numbers Suggest About Future Trends

If these numbers are any indication of the future of facial rejuvenation, they suggest an increased popularity in non-surgical procedures. Cosmetic injectables in particular will likely continue to be the most popular option for facial enhancement. BOTOX injections in particular will likely continue to dominate the field of facial rejuvenation.

Facial plastic surgery procedures will continue to be popular, though facelift numbers may continue to fluctuate and dip. Surgeries such as rhinoplasty and eyelid surgery, however, will likely remain popular as they offer the kinds of cosmetic enhancements that injectables cannot achieve.
