Rhinoplasty Bruising Timeline
By dustinheringer on June 29, 2019
Rhinoplasty surgery addresses imperfections of the nose to produce more symmetrical and proportionate facial features. This plastic surgery procedure is popular at Dr. Dustin Heringer’s practice, Arizona Ocular and Facial Plastic Surgery.
Following rhinoplasty surgery, patients can expect to recover for several weeks. During this time, they will experience a few different surgical side effects. One of the most common and noticeable side effects of rhinoplasty is bruising.
Here, Dr. Heringer prepares patients for the rhinoplasty bruising timeline that they can typically expect after treatment at our Scottsdale, AZ plastic surgery practice.
The Day of Surgery
Many patients expect that it will take a few days for bruises to develop after rhinoplasty surgery, but bruising is apparent almost immediately after treatment. It is common for light bruising to develop beneath the eyes while the patient is in the first 24 hours of surgical recovery. Although bruising may not be significant at first, patients should expect bruises to darken over the next several days.
The First Week of Recovery
During the first week of rhinoplasty recovery, bruising will worsen. Bruises typically peak within three to five days after the surgical procedure. Bruises will darken in appearance and may seem to spread so that they extend beneath the eyes, towards the nose and cheeks.
With the dark bruising and swelling that is common during this phase of recovery, many rhinoplasty patients choose to stay indoors and avoid company during this initial recovery period.
Two to Three Weeks after Surgery
Between two and three weeks after surgery, bruising should begin to lighten. As bruises fade, they should appear light green or yellow in appearance, as opposed to the dark purple appearance they take on shortly after surgery.
Since incisions should be healed by this point, patients can begin wearing makeup at his point. In most cases, makeup can camouflage any remaining bruises. Most of our Scottsdale patients feel confident and comfortable enough to return to work and other social activities two or three weeks after surgery.
A Month after Rhinoplasty
Within a month of rhinoplasty surgery, bruises have subsided. Swelling should have also significantly improved by this point. With bruising gone and swelling down, our patients should have a good vision of what their final surgical results will look like.
Every Recovery Is Unique
Many patients experience the same basic bruising timeline, but every situation is unique and healing may vary slightly. The extent of bruising that develops and the duration of healing will depend largely on the complexity of alterations made during surgery, as well as the surgical technique.
Other factors that may affect bruising after rhinoplasty surgery include how much the patient bleeds during surgery, the tone of the patient’s skin, and how well the patient follows post-surgical care instructions.
If you would like to address your nasal imperfections and improve the balance of your facial features, you may be an ideal candidate for rhinoplasty surgery.
